Background

Villas Asistenciales Santa Maria springs up from the disquietude of a group of people interested in assist boys and girls from the families whose disintegration and serious economic situation incapacitate from satisfying basic development needs, such as attention, protection and care.

This Institution stays registered as Private Charity Association in the year of 1996. In May 1997, from petition of the State Government, Villas Asistenciales is in charge of a group of 28 boys and girls, whose ages fluctuate between one and thirteen years old. Most of them are groups of brothers and sisters from 13 families and proceed from a lodging put under investigation for abuse denouncements and other anomalies. To give attention to these children a children´s hose is provided, which is denominated Holy Mary Children´s hose, which to this date works with the same quantity of population, having already reintegrated 25 children with their families. The children that have been reintegrated, and those who are next, have passed and pass for a process of attention to basic care towards their physical health, such as alimentation, medical attention and formation of hygienic habits; attention to their mental and emotional health with the care and affection from trained and stabled staff and to their social development with support in their scholar education and fortification in their familiar and social bonds. To the families of these children is provided orientation and support in their basic duties performance as fathers and mothers of a family, as well as in their social functioning, orienting them towards the work and responsibilities intake. The experience of the Children´s hose promotes that, with a more preventing optics, it’s instituted two years later a Familiar Development Center, “Holy Family”, which gives diurnal service, kinder garden and integral attention to mono-parental families or in where both members of the parental couple leave their homes to work daily, and whose, for such reason, require a safe care to their children while they are away. This Center currently attends 276 children from 251 families.

A population section even larger would have been attended: all those boys and girls from the families, that, because of living in marginal zones, and that, for lacking of space, poorness and other difficulties, don’t offer their children a functional home and according to their development and subsistence, passing these most of their time in the streets, where they can acquire an easy and structureless lifestyle, which disables them to study and work, and puts them in risk from drugs, loitering, or even criminal groups (from the streets). Continuing with the preventing schema, the Villas Club Center was opened in one of these zones, thinking it as a playing space, of abilities development and of facilitation towards school. In this place of appurtenance for the child in a scholar age, where he can form and identify preferential areas of performance in himself, that help him to structure himself, getting the boyhood and adulthood with personal resources, a more firm identity and alternatives of attainable lifestyle models.
